Frequently Asked Questions:
Do we have onsite catering?
As an historic site, Oatlands does not have a dedicated catering staff or kitchen. Rather, we are more than happy to connect you with area caterers who execute fantastic dinners, business lunches and other events.
Are we ADA accessible?
The Carriage House is the most accessible of our rental spaces, and is best situated for any group with accommodation requests. Other spaces are more complex, due to their historic nature, but please reach out to staff with any questions or concerns.
Do we have weddings?
Oatlands is a place of extraordinary beauty, history and meaning. Set amid historic gardens, rolling landscapes and remarkable architecture, it is also a place where generations of people have lived, worked, celebrated and built community.
At the same time, Oatlands carries a complex history. This land is the ancestral homeland of the Manahoac, Piscataway, and other Indigenous peoples whose stewardship and presence endure today. Oatlands was also a site of enslavement, where African and African-descended men, women and children were forced to labor and live under bondage. Within those conditions, they created family, community and culture, demonstrating resilience, courage and determination that continue to shape this place.
We believe that joyful celebrations and honest history can coexist. Many couples are drawn to Oatlands not only for its beauty, but also for the opportunity to celebrate in a place that invites reflection, connection and care.
Because of our responsibility as stewards of this historic site, weddings at Oatlands are offered on a limited basis and are considered individually according to site capacity, event size, location and compatibility with our preservation mission.
To help ensure that celebrations are grounded in an understanding of the place, we ask wedding couples and key organizers – such as parents or event planners – to participate in a guided tour that explores the history of Oatlands, including the lives of those who were enslaved here. We also encourage couples, if they feel comfortable doing so, to include a brief acknowledgment of the site’s history on their wedding website, in their program, or during their ceremony. Sample language and guidance are available.
When you choose to celebrate at Oatlands, you are helping sustain an important historic site. A portion of rental fees supports preservation, descendant engagement, educational programming and initiatives such as Descendants Day, ensuring that the stories connected to this land continue to be shared for future generations.
We welcome inquiries from couples who are interested in celebrating their special day in a manner that honors both the beauty and the history of Oatlands. For more information, please contact us at info@oatlands.org.
