Before and After Leo Plantation

Robert Carter III filed a deed of emancipation at the Westmoreland County Courthouse in 1791, gradually freeing over 500 enslaved people. It was the largest private emancipation in our country’s history. Carter’s Leo Plantation in Fairfax County had connections to Oatlands in Loudoun County.

Chrystal Gaskins, a descendant of the people enslaved at Leo Plantation, and historical researcher Kristie Kendall will discuss the remarkable story of those enslaved, their lives after freedom, and the land where they lived and labored.
