Dr. Sheri Huerta, Professor of History at George Mason University discusses the ways that enslaved and free Black people claimed rights and freedoms during a time of political upheaval and social change.

Hear the stories of Black Patriots who fought in the American Revolutionary War, highlighting the complex reality that while the nation was gaining independence, many enslaved people were still not free. Historians Marvin-Alonzo Greer and John U. Rees will share stories of courageous service and patriotism, even though independence from Britain did not mean freedom for all.

A lively discussion of the film, Rhythms of the Land, which was screened at Oatlands on Sunday afternoon, October 20, 2024.
