Finding Freedom in a Time of Independence: Black Patriots in the Revolutionary War
African American men, free and enslaved, fought in the Continental Army during America’s Revolutionary War, but their roles are not well-known.
Historians Marvin-Alonzo Greer and John U. Rees will share stories of courageous service and patriotism, even though independence from Britain did not mean freedom for all.
Presented by: Oatlands, The Black History Committee of the Friends of the Thomas Balch Library, Gary Clemens, Clerk of the Circuit
Court Historic Records Division
Made possible in part by a grant from the VA250 Commission in partnership with Virginia Humanities
The program is free and open to the public. Advance registration not required.
Copies of Don Troiani’s Black Soldiers in America’s Wars, 1754-1865 will be available for purchase.
