Oatlands Volunteer Handbook

What can you expect from Oatlands as a Volunteer?

What does Oatlands expect from you as a Volunteer?

  • Complete the initial application process.
  • Participate in orientation and training and ask questions.
  • Accept work assignments that are best suited to you.
  • Be on time and dependable.
  • Record hours worked.
  • Provide good customer service with a smile, courtesy and positive attitude.

Volunteer Position Descriptions

Tea Volunteer– Pour tea and serve patrons.  Volunteering for teas includes filling tea pots, serving food, describing tea and food for patrons, removing dishes and serving pieces after guests are finished eating.  This position could also include the set up procedure which would be setting the tables and helping to set up tea trays.

Gift Shop Volunteer– Greet and wait on guests.  Volunteering in the Gift Shop includes greeting people and answering their questions, selling tour tickets and waiting on customers.  Gift Shop volunteers would also assist in restocking and keeping the shop clean and orderly.

Office Volunteer– Assist with general filing and mailings.  Oatlands needs occasional help with clerical duties which in addition to filing and mailing might include answering the phone and greeting visitors.

Garden Volunteers– Volunteering in the garden includes general garden chores.  Work in the garden is assigned according to the interest and ability of individuals.  In addition to actual gardening; volunteers are needed to conduct garden tours and special events and sales.

Off-site Activity Volunteer– The volunteer in this position would be responsible for manning booths at various off-site events such as fairs and festivals.  Occasionally Oatlands will have an information booth on the property during special events and that booth would be handled the same as an off-site booth.  The person in this position might also be involved in designing and setting up the display.

Technical Volunteer– Help keep Facebook, Twitter and Blog updated.  This job could be done at home.

Volunteer Photographer– Help keep a photo journal of activities and events.  This position would require someone with photo skills who could attend various events and programs.  Taking special photos of the grounds seasonally would be another responsibility of this position.

Grounds Volunteer– Help with seasonal grounds work.  This position would include light grounds maintenance such as picking up sticks, edging, raking leaves, etc.

Special Event Volunteer– Help with activities/events — selling tickets, directing visitors, parking assistance, supporting staff, etc. 

Music Volunteer– Sing, play musical instrument at teas, special events and programs.

Group Volunteers– Work on a one time project.  A school group, Scout Troop, service club or church group could come in and do a one-time project such as painting, clean-up, planting, traffic control at large events, etc.

Summer Camps– Volunteers are needed to help with or lead a group of children with activities in general and help with camp activities.

Marketing– Enter events in community calendars and entering information into Excel.  This job could be done at home.

Sierra Club Potomac Region Outings (SCPRO)

SCPRO is a special activities section of the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter that organizes hikes and other events for the general public on behalf of the Sierra Club’s Washington, DC chapter and the close-in groups of the Maryland and Virginia Chapters. No Sierra Club membership is necessary to participate. We welcome all people on a variety of outdoor adventures, nature walks, conservation outings, and exploration of our natural and regional history.

The Potomac Heritage Trail Association is a membership-based organization dedicated to the development, construction preservation, and interpretation of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail.

MORE’s Mission is to build an inclusive grass roots mountain biking community and organization with the express purpose of expanding riding opportunities and increasing trail access throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. 501c (3) nonprofit organization representing thousands of Washington DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia mountain bikers. Founded in 1992, 

MORE maintains hundreds of miles of natural-surface trails in over 50 state and county parks throughout the Washington DC Metropolitan region. 

MORE members contribute more than 10,000 volunteer hours annually and have constructed hundreds of miles of new, sustainable trail. The club also leads multiple rides each year at local parks, ranging from beginner to advanced levels. This is to be achieved by building and maintaining multi use sustainable trails through promoting volunteerism, partnerships and educational outreach across user groups, thereby enabling fun and rewarding riding experiences for all ages and ability levels.

Bike Loudoun

The mission is to make Loudoun County a place where bicyclists of all abilities have a safe, secure, and convenient alternative transportation network of bikeways (lanes, shared use paths and dedicated trails) that enable everyone to move efficiently and safely to and from such places as work, school, transit, shopping, libraries, and parks and be able to use such bikeways for recreational and tourist activities.

LCEA (Loudoun County Equine Alliance)

The mission of the Loudoun County Equine Alliance is to present a unified voice to actively advocate, educate and communicate the goals, initiatives and benefits of the horse industry, in order to advance the interests of all equine disciplines and the entire equestrian related industry.”

Goals:

1. Quantify the impact of the equine economy in Loudoun County and ascertain the assets and needs to the horse industry on an ongoing basis. 2.Promote the maintenance and expansion of existing facilities and trails and the development of new facilities and trails.
3. Promote and protect new and existing program of land conservation for equine activities. 4. Promote the attraction, retention and expansion of equine related businesses in Loudoun County.
